Black Scholarship in a White Academy - Perseverance in the Face of Injustice: Robert T Palmer, Alonzo M. Flowers, Sosanya Jones Black Scholarship in a White Academy - Perseverance in the Face of Injustice
Robert T Palmer, Alonzo M. Flowers, Sosanya Jones
R807 Discovery Miles 8 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Examines the experience of Black scholarship and faculty in predominantly White academic spaces. While research has emphasized the importance of a diverse faculty, higher education has done little to bring this goal to fruition. The hidden politics at play during the traditional tenure and promotion process represent a significant obstacle to the advancement of Black faculty. While research productivity is the cornerstone of a successful tenure and promotion case at most universities and colleges, Black faculty are more likely to be tasked with extra service activities, which constrains time for research. Many Black faculty are also community-conscious scholars dedicated to conducting research to help uplift their communities, which may not be seen as credible or as valuable in the tenure and promotion process. Edited by Robert T. Palmer, Alonzo M. Flowers III, and Sosanya Jones, Black Scholarship in a White Academy offers important perspectives on how Black faculty and their scholarship have been historically devalued within the academy, particularly in predominantly White academic spaces. Using anti-Blackness theory as a framework, contributors discuss how White hegemony operates to undervalue and obstruct Black scholarship and faculty. Covering such diverse topics as navigating the tenure process, building Black spaces for inclusion, and exploring the intersection of Blackness and disability in higher education, this book presents ways Black faculty can navigate and challenge systemic racism and racist toxicity within their institutions. R2,744 Discovery Miles 27 440 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Since the publication of the best-selling, highly acclaimed first edition, the technology and clinical applications of medical imaging have changed significantly. Gathering these developments into one volume, Webb s Physics of Medical Imaging, Second Edition presents a thorough update of the basic physics, modern technology and many examples of clinical application across all the modalities of medical imaging.

New to the Second Edition

  • Extensive updates to all original chapters
  • Coverage of state-of-the-art detector technology and computer processing used in medical imaging
  • 11 new contributors in addition to the original team of authors
  • Two new chapters on medical image processing and multimodality imaging
  • More than 50 percent new examples and over 80 percent new figures
  • Glossary of abbreviations, color insert and contents lists at the beginning of each chapter

Keeping the material accessible to graduate students, this well-illustrated book reviews the basic physics underpinning imaging in medicine. It covers the major techniques of x-radiology, computerised tomography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, in addition to infrared, electrical impedance and optical imaging. The text also describes the mathematics of medical imaging, image processing, image perception, computational requirements and multimodality imaging. "

High Performance Materials in Aerospace (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995): Harvey M. Flower High Performance Materials in Aerospace (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995)

R1,589 Discovery Miles 15 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Aerospace presents an extremely challenging environment for structural materials and the development of new, or improved, materials: processes for material and for component production are the subject of continuous research activity. It is in the nature of high performance materials that the steps of material and of component production should not be considered in isolation from one another. Indeed, in some cases, the very process of material production may also incorporate part or all of the component production itself and, at the very least, will influence the choice of material/component production method to be employed. How ever, the developments currently taking place are to be discovered largely within the confines of specialist conferences or books each dedicated to perhaps a single element of the overall process. In this book contributors, experts drawn from both academia and the aerospace industry, have joined together to combine their individual knowledge to examine high performance aerospace materials in terms of their production, structure, properties and applications. The central interrelationships between the development of structure through the production route and between structure and the properties exhibited in the final component are considered. It is hoped that the book will be of interest to students of aeronautical engineering and of materials science, together with those working within the aerospace industry. Harvey M. The Xavante in Transition - Health, Ecology, and Bioanthropology in Central Brazil (Paperback): Carlos E.A. Coimbra, Nancy M.... The Xavante in Transition - Health, Ecology, and Bioanthropology in Central Brazil (Paperback)
Carlos E.A. Coimbra, Nancy M. Flowers, Francisco M. Salzano, Ricardo V Santos
R1,160 Discovery Miles 11 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Xavante in Transition presents a diachronic view of the long and complex interaction between the Xavante, an indigenous people of the Brazilian Amazon, and the surrounding nation, documenting the effects of this interaction on Xavante health, ecology, and biology. A powerful example of how a small-scale society, buffeted by political and economic forces at the national level and beyond, attempts to cope with changing conditions, this study will be important reading for demographers, economists, environmentalists, and public health workers. . . . an integrated and politically informed anthropology for the new millennium. They show how the local and the regional meet on the ground and under the skin. --Alan H. Goodman, Professor of Biological Anthropology, Hampshire CollegeThis volume delivers what it promises. Drawing on twenty-five years of team research, the authors combine history, ethnography and bioanthropology on the cutting edge of science in highly readable form. --Daniel Gross, Lead Anthropologist, The World BankNo doubt it will serve as a model for future interdisciplinary scholarship. It promises to be highly relevant to policy formulation and implementation of health care programs among small-scale populations in Brazil and elsewhere. --Laura R. Graham, Professor of Anthropology, University of Iowa Carlos E. A. Coimbra Jr. is Professor of Medical Anthropology at the National School of Public Health, Rio de Janeiro.Nancy M. Flowers is Adjunct Associate Professor of Anthropology, Hunter College. Francisco M. Salzano is Emeritus Professor, Department of Genetics, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Ricardo V. Santos is Professor of Biological Anthropology at the National School of Public Health and at the National Museum IUFRJ, Rio de Janeiro.
